Residents and travelers near Whalan, Minnesota, should expect to see the burning of wood piles along Highway 16 starting the week of March 3. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is conducting this operation as part of efforts to remove dead and diseased trees recently cleared by maintenance crews to enhance safety in the area.

The work is supported by a Department of Natural Resources burn permit. MnDOT will select appropriate days for burning based on favorable weather conditions, including wind speed and direction, to ensure safety. Local law enforcement and fire departments have been informed about the activities for awareness.

MnDOT maintenance crew members will oversee the burning process to ensure it is properly fueled and monitored for safety concerns. This method has been employed at other sites within southeast Minnesota.

Typically during mild winters, MnDOT crews focus on removing hazardous trees and brush that could pose risks. These operations are usually conducted in winter months when conditions allow for more efficient tree removal tasks.
