The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has opened applications for its Cooperative Development Grant Program, which aims to assist new agricultural cooperatives in Minnesota. The program is designed to help these organizations develop business plans and strategies focused on producing, processing, or marketing products and services grown in the state.

“Minnesota has a proud tradition of farmer-owned cooperatives that have anchored rural communities, helping producers pool resources, share risks, and maintain local control in the face of changing market conditions,” said Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen. “We’re proud to invest in this model so the next generation of farmers can build thriving businesses and keep their communities strong.”

The MDA will distribute up to $185,000 during this funding cycle. Applicants are eligible to request between $2,500 and $50,000 per project but must provide matching funds equal to at least half of the total project cost.

Projects supported by the grant may continue for up to three years from the start date of their contracts. To qualify for funding, cooperatives must be organized under chapter 308A or 308B and must have been incorporated on or after January 1, 2016.

Those interested can find detailed eligibility requirements and application instructions on the Cooperative Development Grant Program webpage. Applications are due by 4 p.m. Central Time on Monday, January 5, 2026.
