Minnesota beef producers are set to vote on a proposed increase to the state’s beef checkoff fee. The suggested change would raise the current $1.00 per head assessment by 50 cents, marking the first increase in over three decades since the federal checkoff was established at $1.00 per head for all U.S. beef producers.

Currently, proceeds from the checkoff are divided equally between the Minnesota Beef Council and the Cattlemen’s Beef Board. If approved, producers would pay $1.50 per head but could request a refund of 50 cents per head if they choose. According to organizers, funds from this increase would be used for additional research, promotion, and consumer activities related to beef production within Minnesota.

The checkoff does not apply to dairy cows purchased for milk production, but it does apply when dairy cows and veal calves are sold by dairy producers for slaughter.

Producers interested in voting must ensure they are listed with the Minnesota Beef Council. To join the list or receive a ballot, individuals can visit the Minnesota Beef Council website, email info@mnbeef.org, or call 763-479-1011.

A series of public hearings have been scheduled as part of the referendum process:

All hearings are open to members of the public free of charge.
