U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, who serves Minnesota’s 5th district in Congress, used her social media platform on September 9 and 10, 2025, to voice concerns about government overreach and economic inequality.
On September 9, Omar commented on actions by governments regarding human rights organizations. She wrote: "Today in @TLHumanRights, we discussed how authoritarian governments around the world are using laws that claim to focus on transparency in order to monitor and shut down human rights organizations that are critical of their policies. The Trump Administration is following suit." (September 9, 2025)
Later that evening, she criticized the authority of U.S. officials over nonprofit organizations. On her account she stated: "No single U.S. official should have the power to strip any nonprofit or NGO of their status over false accusations. This kind of broad authority has done nothing to make Americans any safer, but instead punishes those who dissent." (September 9, 2025)
The next day, Omar addressed wealth inequality in the United States. She posted: "$6.6 trillion in the hands of 400 people is the result of deliberate policy choices. The big ugly law is giving even more tax breaks for the rich and corporate loopholes to fuel this inequality. Entire generations are being locked out while billionaires cash in." (September 10, 2025)
Omar has served as a member of Congress since replacing Keith Ellison in Minnesota's 5th district in 2019 and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently residing in Minneapolis at age forty, Omar graduated from North Dakota State University with a bachelor's degree.
