Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing economic inequality, healthcare policy, and community recognition.
On July 28, 2025, Omar wrote: "If you’re tired of CEOs hoarding record profits while working families suffer, you're not alone. CEOs made 285x more than their employees. Trump’s tax bill hands each of them another $500,000 in tax breaks. It’s time to tax the rich and pay workers!" She highlighted concerns over executive compensation compared to worker wages and criticized former President Donald Trump’s tax policies for benefiting high-earning individuals.
Later that day, Omar commented on federal health policy regarding Medicaid and Planned Parenthood: "The Trump administration tried to weaponize Medicaid to punish people for getting care at Planned Parenthood. They failed. This is a win for every person who relies on Planned Parenthood for cancer screenings, birth control, STI treatment, and so much more." Her statement referenced attempts by the previous administration to restrict Medicaid funding for services provided by Planned Parenthood.
In a separate post recognizing local achievement, Omar stated: "Washburn High School has been an invaluable asset to South Minneapolis, leading both their students and the community through academics, arts, and athletics. It was my honor to present Washburn with a Congressional Record Statement recognizing their 100 years of service to #CD5!"
Omar has served as the representative for Minnesota's 5th District since 2019 after succeeding Keith Ellison. Before her tenure in Congress, she was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu in 1982 and now residing in Minneapolis, Omar graduated from North Dakota State University with a bachelor's degree in 2011.
