Rep. Ilhan Omar, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019, used her social media platform this week to address the ongoing government shutdown and issues related to healthcare coverage.
On October 9, Omar criticized Republican lawmakers for their approach during the shutdown. She stated, "Day 9 of the Republican government shutdown. Instead of negotiating to reopen the government, Republicans would rather raise healthcare costs and kick millions of Americans off their coverage. Unacceptable."
Later that day, she emphasized the importance of healthcare access for all Americans regardless of political affiliation. In her post on October 9, she wrote, "No matter what side of the aisle you’re on, the truth is clear: healthcare is a human right and something all Americans deserve. We end this shutdown by making sure millions of people continue to receive their healthcare coverage."
Omar also highlighted local leadership during Hispanic Heritage Month in an October 10 tweet: "During Hispanic Heritage Month, and every month, I'm grateful to have the partnership of such strong, dedicated Latine leaders in the Fifth District. Our office wanted to highlight a few leaders working to create a brighter future for Minnesotans."
Omar has represented Minnesota's 5th District in Congress since replacing Keith Ellison in 2019 and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and now residing in Minneapolis, she graduated from North Dakota State University with a BA in 2011.
