Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, criticized recent Republican actions in a series of posts on October 10, 2025. Her tweets addressed government decisions affecting medical research funding and the ongoing federal shutdown.

On October 10, 2025, Omar posted: "A government that cancels grants for medical research to punish universities has lost its moral compass.

Trump's war on 'wokeness' is hurting kids with failing hearts.

That’s unforgivable."

Later that day, she commented on the political responsibility for the federal shutdown: "Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House. The devastating impacts of this shutdown fall entirely on them.

Minnesotans made this clear at my town hall: Republicans need to end this shutdown and stop their efforts to throw millions off their healthcare coverage." (October 10, 2025)

Omar continued her criticism by highlighting Congressional inaction: "House Republicans are about to enter week four of their self-declared vacation while Americans miss paychecks and healthcare hangs in the balance." (October 10, 2025)

Rep. Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th district since replacing Keith Ellison in 2019. Before her election to Congress, she served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently residing in Minneapolis, Omar graduated from North Dakota State University with a BA in 2011.
