Following a four-day trial, Matthew Thomas McGregor, a 35-year-old man from Red Lake, has been found guilty by a federal jury on charges of sexually abusing a minor. The announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson.
Court documents and evidence presented during the trial revealed that McGregor groomed and sexually assaulted a victim under the age of 15 at a residence. Sentencing will occur at a later date.
"Sexual violence against children is one of the most devastating crimes we prosecute, and tragically, it occurs at disproportionately high rates in our tribal communities," said Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson. "This conviction reflects our unwavering commitment to standing with our native nations like the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians in protecting their children and delivering justice."
FBI Minneapolis Special Agent in Charge Alvin M. Winston Sr. commented on the conviction: "Yesterday, a federal jury convicted Matthew McGregor for sexual abuse of a minor." He emphasized that those who commit such crimes will face rigorous law enforcement efforts.
The case resulted from an investigation by the FBI and Red Lake Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mary S. Riverso and Rachel L. Kraker prosecuting.
