Rep. Ilhan Omar, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Minnesota’s 5th district, announced on July 25 and 26, 2025, new legislative initiatives focused on environmental policy and public health.
The following day, July 26, she addressed child safety issues related to drowning: "Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children and young people worldwide—disproportionately impacting communities of color. Today, @RepDWStweets and I introduced a resolution recognizing #WorldDrowningPreventionDay and calling for urgent action to save lives." Omar has served as the representative for Minnesota's 5th District since 2019 after succeeding Keith Ellison. Prior to her tenure in Congress, she was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982, Omar currently resides in Minneapolis and holds a BA from North Dakota State University.
