Rep. Ilhan Omar, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Minnesota’s 5th district, voiced criticism on July 17, 2025, regarding recent legislative actions related to the cryptocurrency industry. In a series of posts on her official Twitter account, Omar raised concerns about the influence of wealthy individuals and corporations in shaping crypto policy.
On July 17, 2025, Omar stated: "Crypto shouldn’t be a reckless playground for billionaires and politicians to enrich themselves at the expense of everyone else. We need strong, clear rules to protect the wallets, savings, and futures of the American people. It is another dark day in the People’s House."
She further commented on industry influence over legislation: "The Crypto industry has spent tens of millions to buy influence and now we’re passing three bills crafted by and for the crypto industry. This is why we people feel like the rules are rigged and why we need to get big money out of politics."
Omar also expressed concern about potential consequences for consumers: "This will put corporate crypto interests over the financial security of everyday Americans."
Omar’s remarks come as lawmakers debate regulatory frameworks for digital assets in response to growing adoption and concerns over market volatility. She argues that recent legislative developments favor corporate interests rather than prioritizing consumer protection.
Omar has served in Congress since 2019 after succeeding Keith Ellison as representative for Minnesota’s 5th district. Prior to her tenure in Congress, she was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982, Omar resides in Minneapolis and holds a BA from North Dakota State University.
