Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, recently posted a series of statements on her official social media account addressing topics ranging from federal spending to voting rights and the ongoing government shutdown.
On October 15, 2025, Omar criticized federal allocations and trade policy impacts on American farmers: "$20 billion for Argentina. $0 for U.S. soybean farmers, including in Minnesota, who are paying for Trump’s trade wars."
The following day, she commented on recent developments concerning voting rights: "From 'you don’t have to vote again' to a Supreme Court ready to gut the Voting Rights Act. The assault on voting is no coincidence. It’s part of their plan to silence millions of Americans and rig democracy from the bench." This post came amid national debates over access to voting and the future of the Voting Rights Act.
Later on October 16, Omar addressed the effects of an ongoing government shutdown: "Every day this shutdown continues, real people are being hurt — federal workers, small businesses, families waiting for critical services. Republicans have a responsibility to reopen the government so people can be paid."
Omar has served as a member of Congress since 2019 after replacing Keith Ellison and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently residing in Minneapolis, she graduated from North Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2011.
