Rep. Ilhan Omar, currently serving her third term in the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 5th district, took to social media on April 29 and 30, 2025, to discuss critical issues pertaining to immigration, student loans, and cannabis legalization. Omar, who succeeded Keith Ellison in 2019, highlighted her concerns through a series of posts.
In a tweet posted on April 29, Omar expressed her concerns regarding the treatment of immigrant families. She wrote, "Immigrant families are being disappeared without due process, and Trump is using the Alien Enemies Act to justify it." Omar urged all levels of government to use available tools to counter what she described as "attacks on immigrants."
Later, on the same day, Omar shared her legislative efforts regarding student loans. She tweeted, "I introduced an amendment to stop the government from garnishing wages or Social Security from people behind on student loans because soon the Trump admin plans to do just that." She further cautioned that such actions would negatively impact millions already struggling financially, adding, "Debt shouldn’t be a life sentence."
On April 30, Omar addressed the issue of cannabis legalization. She stated, "No one should be in prison for cannabis, especially when it’s legal across half the country." She advocated for the decriminalization of cannabis, the expungement of related convictions, and investments back into the communities most affected.
Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1982 and emigrated to the United States, where she currently resides in Minneapolis. She is a graduate of North Dakota State University, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree since 2011.
