Voting has commenced for the 2024-25 Name a Snowplow contest, as announced by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). Eight new names will be chosen for MnDOT snowplows, with one name assigned to each MnDOT district.

The public can view the list of finalists and cast their votes at mndot.gov/nameasnowplow. Voting is open until noon on Friday, February 7. Participants are allowed to vote once and select up to eight preferred names.

In December, MnDOT received over 7,300 submissions for snowplow names. After reviewing these suggestions, staff selected 50 finalists based on factors such as uniqueness, frequency of submission, relevance to Minnesota, and clarity for general audiences.

The winning names will be revealed in February. Minnesotans are encouraged to follow @mndot on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram for updates on the contest as well as winter weather alerts and project news.

This marks MnDOT's fifth Name a Snowplow contest. To date, 32 snowplows have been named through previous contests. Additionally, four other snowplows were named by MnDOT staff: Giiwedin-The North Wind; Goonodaabaan-Snow Vehicle (both Ojibwe); Icamna-Blizzard; and Wakta!-Watch Out! (both Dakota) in recognition of highways near tribal lands.
