The term “outsider art” comprises drawings, paintings, sculpture, and architecture created by artists without formal training. It’s like folk art, except that folk art comes out of a community, whereas outsider art comes out of an individual psyche. Outsider artists are almost always socially isolated and often mentally ill. Yet they are somehow able to create amazing works of art. To supplement our discussion, we'll look at a variety of images, and Steve Schroer will share his story of an up-close-and-personal encounter with the art of Henry Darger.
