U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, who has represented Minnesota’s 5th district in Congress since 2019, used her social media platform on September 8, 2025, to voice concerns about economic policy, defense spending, and health insurance industry practices.

In a post made at 16:27 UTC on September 8, Omar criticized the current state of the economy under former President Donald Trump’s agenda. She stated: "Instead of economic growth and lower prices, we are experiencing skyrocketing costs and the weakest jobs market in years. Trump's economic agenda is crushing workers, businesses, and families. Families deserve an economy that creates opportunity, not one that kills jobs."

Later that day at 18:54 UTC, Omar addressed federal defense spending by writing: "Congress is preparing to send the Pentagon nearly $1 TRILLION to defense contractors and endless wars. That’s why I introduced 10 amendments to: Cut $150 billion in wasteful Pentagon spending Center human rights in our foreign policy"

Omar also highlighted executive compensation within the health insurance sector at 20:30 UTC on September 8. She wrote: "The top 6 health insurance CEOs pocketed $159.4 million in total compensation last year, while Americans are paying more for less coverage. Medicare for All would stop this exploitation in its tracks."

Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently resides in Minneapolis. She previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019 before succeeding Keith Ellison as representative for Minnesota's 5th congressional district.

She graduated from North Dakota State University with a BA degree in 2011.
