Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, addressed several national and international issues in a series of posts on September 9, 2025.
In her first statement at 16:22 UTC, Omar emphasized the importance of vaccines and criticized conspiracy theories regarding their use. She wrote, "Vaccines save lives. Full stop. In Minnesota, we follow science, not RFK Jr's conspiracy theories. I’m grateful our state is stepping up where the federal government is failing."
Later that day at 18:00 UTC, she commented on a recent Supreme Court decision concerning racial profiling by law enforcement. Omar stated, "The Supreme Court said it’s okay for the government to use race and language to decide who gets stopped and questioned. Once you accept racial profiling as 'legal,' it creeps into every corner of American life. Utterly unacceptable and shameful."
At 20:48 UTC on the same day, Omar responded to reports of an Israeli attack on Qatar amid ongoing conflict involving Israel and Hamas. She wrote, "I condemn Israel’s attack on Qatar. This attack, which violates international law, not only further harms the possibility of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas but it also jeopardizes the lives of the remaining hostages. Netanyahu must be held accountable for his war crimes."
Omar has served as a member of Congress since 2019 after replacing Keith Ellison and previously represented her community in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and now residing in Minneapolis, Omar earned her undergraduate degree from North Dakota State University in 2011.
