The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has announced the opening of its Green Fertilizer Grant Program, aimed at supporting agricultural and rural electric cooperatives in Minnesota that are registered as 308A or 308B. The initiative is intended to promote investment in the manufacturing of green fertilizers within the state.

Green fertilizers are nitrogen-based products created from water, air, and renewable energy sources. According to the MDA, these fertilizers offer climate and sustainability benefits when compared to traditional nitrogen-based fertilizers made from fossil fuels. The use of green fertilizers is seen as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with agricultural production.

The department plans to distribute up to $3.8 million for projects that are ready to begin business operations or construction. Eligible applicants can request funding amounts ranging from $250,000 to $3.8 million. The deadline for submitting applications is Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen stated, “Local production of renewable fertilizer can help stabilize costs and ensure farmers have reliable access to the inputs they need. Supporting innovation in this space helps our farmers, our economy, and our environment.”

More information on eligibility requirements and the application process can be found on the Green Fertilizer Program Grant webpage.
