Rep. Ilhan Omar, currently serving as the U.S. Representative for Minnesota’s 5th district, posted a series of statements on social media addressing Indigenous communities, economic issues, and U.S. foreign aid between October 13 and 14, 2025.
On October 13, Omar acknowledged the significance of Indigenous communities in Minnesota, stating, "Minnesota is home to incredible Indigenous communities like the Dakota, Ojibwe, and so many others whose leadership and traditions continue to shape our state every day. On Indigenous Peoples Day, I’m grateful for their wisdom and ongoing work to protect their land."
The following day, Omar addressed rising costs and tariffs in a critique of former President Donald Trump’s economic policies. She wrote on October 14, "Groceries? More expensive. Beef? At an all-time high. Jobs? Slowing down. Tariffs? You’re paying for them. Trump called it ‘America First.’ Turns out he meant ‘Americans Pay First.’"
Later that same day, Omar commented on U.S. foreign aid in comparison to domestic healthcare funding. She posted, "Wild how the so-called 'America First' president found money for a $20 billion bailout to Argentina… But somehow we can't afford to help Americans keep their healthcare."
Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th district in Congress since 2019, succeeding Keith Ellison. Before her tenure in Congress, she served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982, she currently resides in Minneapolis. Omar graduated from North Dakota State University with a bachelor’s degree in 2011.
