Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, addressed healthcare and government shutdown concerns in a series of tweets posted on October 7 and 8, 2025.
On October 7, Omar criticized another lawmaker’s voting record regarding healthcare access for her constituents. She wrote, "Pete: You shamefully voted to rip healthcare away from over 17,000 Minnesotans in your own district. Since you failed to do your job, I’m grateful our Senators are stepping in to protect healthcare for thousands of Minnesotans and millions of Americans."
The following day, Omar assured her constituents that her office remains operational during the ongoing government shutdown. In a tweet dated October 8, she stated, "My office is open and ready to fight for our Fifth District communities every single day - even during a government shutdown. To share how the shutdown is impacting you, contact my office at https://t.co/d1RYRjVBgg."
Later that same day, Omar highlighted the financial difficulties faced by federal workers during shutdowns and promoted her legislative efforts aimed at providing relief. She tweeted, "When the government shuts down, federal workers still have bills to pay and many are struggling to afford childcare while working without pay. My Federal Worker Childcare Protection Act would allow parents to be reimbursed for those costs."
Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th District since 2019 after succeeding Keith Ellison. Before joining Congress, she served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently residing in Minneapolis, Omar earned her BA from North Dakota State University in 2011.
