U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, who serves Minnesota’s 5th district in Congress, recently addressed issues of heritage, food security, and child nutrition in a series of social media posts.
On September 20, 2025, Omar posted about her identity and position in Congress: “I’m proud of my Somali heritage, proud of my faith, and beyond proud to be an American. P.S. To the president: no, you can’t impeach a member of Congress ”.
Later that day, she highlighted the issue of child hunger in the United States. In a post on September 20, 2025, she wrote: “No child should go hungry in the wealthiest country in the world. We need universal school meals. We need to end school lunch shaming. I’m fighting to ensure our kids get the nutrition they need to succeed.”
Continuing her focus on food insecurity, Omar addressed what she described as efforts to downplay hunger statistics. On September 22, 2025, she stated: “Food security isn’t ‘politicized.’ Hunger is real. Millions of Americans are struggling. Ending decades of tracking is nothing more than an attempt to hide the scale of the crisis. Pretending the problem doesn’t exist is cruel and cowardly.”
Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th District since 2019 after succeeding Keith Ellison in Congress. She previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019 and was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 before moving to Minneapolis. Omar holds a bachelor’s degree from North Dakota State University.
