U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, who has served Minnesota’s 5th district in Congress since 2019, posted a series of statements on social media addressing international human rights, labor policy, and local leadership.
On September 16, 2025, Omar commented on a recent United Nations report regarding Gaza. She wrote: "The UN report makes plain what so many families in Gaza have been living through: the deliberate destruction of Palestinians. We have a moral responsibility to stop enabling this genocide and hold Israel accountable."
Later that day, on September 17, 2025, Omar criticized proposed changes by the U.S. Department of Labor under former President Donald Trump’s administration. She stated: "Trump’s Department of Labor wants to gut 60 worker protection rules. This is what it looks like to put corporate profits over workers’ lives. American workers are not disposable, and I’ll keep fighting to protect their safety."
In another post dated September 17, 2025, Omar recognized the career of Senator Ann Rest upon her retirement. She said: "Senator Ann Rest has been a dedicated force for working families throughout her four decades of service. She leaves behind an incredible legacy of leadership and integrity. It's been an honor to work with her to build a stronger Minnesota. Enjoy your retirement, Ann!"
Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently resides in Minneapolis. She earned her BA from North Dakota State University in 2011 and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives before being elected to Congress.
