Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, recently highlighted a series of recognitions and criticisms through her social media posts. The tweets covered topics ranging from honoring local sports figures to critiquing federal policy decisions and celebrating individual achievements in climate advocacy.

On September 15, 2025, Omar expressed support for awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to members of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" U.S. Olympic men's ice hockey team, emphasizing their ties to Minnesota: "I'm proud to have supported awarding members of the 1980 'Miracle on Ice' U.S. Olympic men's ice hockey team with the Congressional Gold Medal.

The team included 12 players & Head Coach Herb Brooks from Minnesota.

That’s Minnesota n(ice) right there." (posted September 15, 2025).

A day later, on September 16, Omar used her platform to criticize actions by the Trump administration regarding drug policy and international law: "The Trump Admin is once again using the failed war on drugs to justify their egregious violation of international law.

There is NO legal justification. It risks spiraling into the exact type of endless, pointless conflict that Trump supposedly opposes.

I have a War Powers" (posted September 16, 2025).

Later that same day, she recognized Donna Minter for her efforts in raising awareness about climate justice: "Donna Minter spent 64 days biking over 3,000 miles across our country to raise awareness and support for climate justice.

She raised over $25,000 for various Minnesota-based climate nonprofits.

It was my honor to recognize her extraordinary achievements on the House Floor." (posted September 16, 2025).

Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th District since replacing Keith Ellison in Congress in 2019 and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently residing in Minneapolis, Omar graduated from North Dakota State University with a BA in 2011.
