Rep. Ilhan Omar, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 5th district, has publicly criticized the Trump Administration’s recent military actions in the Caribbean and announced her intention to introduce a War Powers resolution regarding hostilities against Venezuela.

On September 11, 2025, Omar wrote on her social media account: "The Trump Administration launched a military escalation in the Caribbean without ANY legal authority and without approval from Congress. I’m introducing a War Powers resolution to terminate hostilities against Venezuela and reassert Congress's constitutional role."

The following day, Omar reiterated her stance by stating: "Friendly reminder: only Congress can declare war. Trump ordered a strike on a retreating boat in the Caribbean without Congressional approval. My War Powers Resolution will get answers and reassert Congress’s constitutional role." This post was published on September 12, 2025.

In addition to her legislative efforts, Omar shared news of being recognized for her work in Congress. On September 12, 2025, she posted: "I am beyond honored to be inducted into the 2025 Sabathani's Southside Hall of Heroes for my work in Congress. I’ll keep fighting every single day to build a brighter, stronger Minnesota for future generations."

Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th District since 2019 after succeeding Keith Ellison. She previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019 and is known for her advocacy on issues related to congressional authority over military actions. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982, Omar currently resides in Minneapolis and holds a BA from North Dakota State University.
