Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, has used her social media platform to voice opposition to U.S. military policy and funding decisions in a series of recent posts.
On September 10, 2025, Omar criticized the use of U.S. weapons in Gaza, stating: "No child should fall asleep wondering if their home will still be standing in the morning. Yet U.S. weapons are fueling that nightmare in Gaza.
That’s why I’m proud to co-sponsor the Block the Bombs Act to finally end blank checks for destruction.
STOP. THE. BOMBS."
Later that same day, Omar announced her vote against the defense authorization bill and called for reduced defense spending: "I voted NO on the defense authorization bill.
Congress just voted to send another $882+ billion to the Pentagon.
It’s way past time to reduce our defense budget and make investments in our communities, not in weapons manufacturers."
On September 11, 2025, Omar addressed an unauthorized military strike reportedly ordered by former President Donald Trump: "Trump launched a strike in the Caribbean with no legal authority, no Congressional approval, and no answers about who was on the boat.
That’s why I introduced a resolution to stop these attacks and remind everyone that only Congress can declare war."
Omar has represented Minnesota's 5th District since 2019 after succeeding Keith Ellison. She previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019 and is currently based in Minneapolis. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982, Omar moved to the United States as a refugee and earned her BA from North Dakota State University in 2011.
