Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, recently highlighted her engagement with local students and community organizations in a series of social media posts dated September 6, 2025.
In one post, Omar described her meeting with student leaders at the University of Minnesota: "I sat down with members of the University of Minnesota Undergraduate Student Government to discuss how we can work together to expand access to higher education, address food insecurity on campus, and strengthen student safety." (September 6, 2025).
Omar also announced her induction into a local hall of recognition: "It was my honor to be inducted into the 2025 Southside Heroes Hall as part of the Sabathani Living History Museum. It’s my greatest honor to serve you in Congress as the Representative for Minnesota’s Fifth District." (September 6, 2025).
Addressing recent violence affecting her constituency, Omar posted about an act of remembrance held in Congress: "I led a moment of silence on the House Floor with the full Minnesota Congressional Delegation to mourn the victims of the Annunciation Catholic School shooting. We will continue to stand with the Annunciation community as they heal from this horrific tragedy." (September 6, 2025).
Omar has represented Minnesota's 5th district since replacing Keith Ellison in Congress in 2019. Before serving at the federal level, she was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently residing in Minneapolis, Omar earned her bachelor's degree from North Dakota State University in 2011.
