Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, recently highlighted her engagement with local community groups and her legislative priorities through a series of posts on social media.

On September 6, 2025, Omar shared her participation in a fitness initiative for seniors, writing, "I joined the Midtown YWCA Silver Sneakers to hear directly from seniors about how we can expand Social Security and fight back against the Trump administration. Silver Sneakers is a free fitness program for seniors on Medicaid!"

That same day, she posted about gun control advocacy efforts at Minneapolis City Hall: "I joined @MomsDemand at Minneapolis City Hall to demand an assault weapons ban following the horrific shooting at Annunciation Catholic School."

Omar also visited Norway House in Minneapolis to discuss community engagement and accessibility. She stated, "It was incredible to tour Norway House in Minneapolis and hear from CEO Christina Carleton about the work Norway House does to bring Minneapolis together, and discuss ways we can work together to make the space more accessible to our community."

Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019 after succeeding Keith Ellison. Before joining Congress, she served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982, Omar has lived in Minneapolis for several years and graduated from North Dakota State University with a bachelor’s degree in 2011.
