Rep. Ilhan Omar, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019, recently addressed issues ranging from homelessness to Social Security and veterans’ housing in a series of posts on her official Twitter account.
On August 14, 2025, Omar criticized former President Donald Trump’s reported plans regarding homelessness, stating, "Trump’s plan to round up unhoused people and jail them for being poor is beyond cruel. The answer to homelessness is more affordable housing and community resources, not military crackdowns."
The following day, she commented on the legacy of Social Security and expressed concerns about proposed changes by congressional Republicans. On August 15, 2025, Omar wrote: "90 years of Social Security and it has been one of the most successful programs in our nation’s history. But Republicans in Congress have talked about cutting benefits, raising the retirement age, and privatizing the program. We must reject those attacks and instead expand".
Later that day, Omar highlighted her involvement in supporting veterans through new housing initiatives in Minnesota. She posted on August 15, 2025: "It was incredible to join the grand opening of a new housing complex for unhoused veterans at Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans. I was proud to secure $750,000 in federal funding for this project and I'll keep fighting to ensure our veterans get the support they deserve."
Omar began her congressional service after replacing Keith Ellison in 2019. Before joining Congress, she served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently residing in Minneapolis, Omar graduated from North Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2011.
