Rep. Ilhan Omar, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 5th district, addressed a range of policy issues in a series of posts on her official Twitter account this week.
On July 24, 2025, Omar criticized efforts to reduce labor protections, writing: "Stripping away labor protections makes it easier for companies to exploit labor without consequence. There is nothing “obsolete” about keeping people safe on the job. This will endanger workers in high-risk industries."
The following day, she commented on nuclear disarmament, stating: "There are only two ways the era of nuclear weapons will end - either we abolish our nuclear weapons, or our weapons will abolish humanity. The United States must join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and join over half of the countries around the world in mutual" (July 25, 2025).
Later that same day, Omar announced her involvement with new legislation aimed at restricting prescription drug advertising. She wrote: "I’m proud to co-lead the End Prescription Drug Ads Now Act with @SenSanders, @RepJerryNadler, and @RepDexterOR. Big Pharma spends billions marketing drugs to patients instead of making them affordable. Medical decisions should be made with the help of your doctor, not a" (July 25, 2025).
Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th District in Congress since 2019 after previously serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and now residing in Minneapolis, she graduated from North Dakota State University with a BA in 2011.
