Representative Ilhan Omar, who has served in the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 5th district since 2019, recently addressed a range of international and domestic concerns through her social media posts. Omar, born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently residing in Minneapolis, used her platform to comment on political developments both abroad and within the United States.

On July 15, 2025, Omar posted about the situation in Ethiopia under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government. She stated: "Abiy's government has literally gotten away with murder. It is well past time for serious conversations about justice for the many atrocities in Ethiopia under his rule."

Later that day, she criticized actions by the Trump Administration regarding student activism. In a tweet posted at 18:56 UTC, Omar wrote: "The Trump Administration is using Canary Mission, an anonymous site that blacklists and doxxes individuals, to target dissenting students with deportation for exercising their First Amendment right of free speech.

This shameless, authoritarian display is a page right out of the".

In another post on July 15 at 20:48 UTC, Omar continued her critique of federal policy toward student protesters. She stated: "By targeting students for their political opinions, the Trump Administration is swiftly pushing our country into an authoritarian state.

In today's @EdWorkforceDems hearing, I questioned administrators from @CUNY, @UCBerkeley, and @Georgetown on what they're doing to protect".

Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th District since replacing Keith Ellison in Congress in 2019. Prior to this role, she served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. She holds a BA from North Dakota State University (2011).
