In light of ongoing discussions regarding the security of legislators and the Capitol campus, Common Cause Minnesota has issued a statement urging for greater public involvement. The organization highlights that these conversations are predominantly occurring behind closed doors.
Annastacia Belladonna-Carrera, executive director of Common Cause Minnesota, emphasized the importance of public participation in these discussions. She stated, “Right now, conversations about changes to the Capitol campus about security are happening mostly in private. But Minnesotans deserve to be part of a discussion that directly impacts the public.”
Belladonna-Carrera called on members of the Advisory Committee on Capitol Area Security to conduct these dialogues openly. She remarked, “A safe Minnesota Capitol is vital — and we can achieve that while also including public interest in strengthening the openness, accountability, and transparency that define good government.” According to her, it is crucial for Minnesotans to have input on decisions affecting their access to elected officials.
Common Cause Minnesota's stance underscores the need for transparency and public engagement in governmental processes related to security measures at the state Capitol.
