Ilhan Omar, serving in the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota's 5th district since 2019, has voiced her concerns regarding recent budget proposals affecting critical social programs. Omar, who succeeded Keith Ellison and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives, has taken to social media to express her opposition.

On July 2, 2025, Omar stated, "I took to the House floor to demand we protect Medicaid and SNAP against any cuts." She labeled the budget bill as "immoral" and emphasized her commitment to preventing these proposed reductions.

Later that day, Omar criticized a provision within the bill allocating substantial funds for immigration enforcement. She noted in a subsequent post that this financial allocation amounted to $150 billion and was funded by reducing Medicaid and SNAP resources. In her words: "They want to take food off your table and healthcare from your family to fund a police state."

Omar highlighted individual stories like Tamara's family who rely on SNAP benefits for nutrition. On July 2, she expressed concern about these potential cuts: "The GOP budget bill cuts BILLIONS from SNAP, taking this crucial support away from them." Her opposition is underscored by personal connections with constituents affected by such legislative changes.

Additional context reveals that Ilhan Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and now resides in Minneapolis. She holds a BA from North Dakota State University obtained in 2011.
