Pete Stauber, Representative of Minnesota, has criticized Governor Tim Walz's policies, claiming they attract illegal immigration and undermine the priorities of state residents. This statement was made on the social media platform X.

"Under the failed leadership of Tim Walz, Minnesota has become a magnet for illegal immigrants," said Stauber. "Tim must explain why he continues to prioritize the interests of illegal immigrants over the needs of Minnesotans."

In June 2025, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz testified before a U.S. House hearing to defend his state’s immigration policies amid Republican criticism of so-called "sanctuary" jurisdictions. According to CBS Minnesota, Walz argued that Minnesota cooperates with federal authorities while preserving local discretion on issues such as driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants and police engagement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The debate focuses on balancing public safety with immigrant integration.

Minnesota’s undocumented immigrant population was estimated at 95,000 in 2022, representing about 1.5% of the state's population. According to Minnesota's Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) and the American Immigration Council, immigrants contributed nearly $2 billion in state and local taxes, with 94% of the state’s net population growth from 2020 to 2024 attributed to immigration. These figures highlight the demographic and fiscal significance of immigrant communities in the state.

The state's public spending on services for undocumented immigrants is modest compared to other states, primarily occurring through local education systems and emergency healthcare. The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy reports that undocumented immigrants nationwide pay approximately $37.3 billion annually in state and local taxes, helping fund essential services. Minnesota-specific allocations are limited but reflect the broader national fiscal contribution.

Stauber, a Republican representing Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District since 2019, serves on the House Natural Resources, Small Business, and Transportation and Infrastructure Committees. According to Ballotpedia, he is a former police officer and Duluth City Council member whose legislative priorities focus on law enforcement, energy development, and rural economic growth. Stauber often champions pro-mining and pro-police policies.
