A new study from the Foundation for the Restoration of America (FFROA) highlights rising concerns about chemical abortions in Minnesota, revealing that more than 1 in 10 women experience serious health issues. The findings were published in a recent report.

According to the FFROA study, the risks associated with chemical abortion are greater than previously understood by the public. It states that over 10% of women who take mifepristone face serious adverse events, including life-threatening conditions such as sepsis and hemorrhaging.

The research, which analyzed insurance claims data from 2017 to 2023, indicates that Minnesota is among the leading states for chemical abortions, with an increasing rate of adverse events. In 2023 alone, 11.2% of chemical abortions in the United States resulted in serious complications, contrasting with the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) claim that fewer than 0.5% of women encounter such issues.

The FFROA attributes this rise to Minnesota's policies facilitating greater access to chemical abortion, which has led to an increase in medication use while downplaying associated risks. The data shows that chemical abortions now constitute a significant portion of total abortions in the state. Despite assurances regarding safety, more than 150,000 chemical abortions nationwide last year resulted in serious health complications.

Based on these findings, FFROA said: "Policymakers and regulatory bodies should review real-world evidence and act decisively to prevent serious harms to women and their health and safety."

The Foundation for the Restoration of America describes itself as a nonprofit organization "dedicated to educating Americans that the principles of our nation’s founding should continue to serve as the foundation for our future," according to its website.
