Common Cause Minnesota is urging Senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar to block the SAVE Act following its passage in the U.S. House of Representatives. The organization claims the act fuels voter suppression by imposing barriers on eligible voters in Minnesota.

"By imposing stringent proof of citizenship requirements and restricting voter registration to in-person only, the SAVE Act disproportionately affects marginalized Minnesotans, married individuals with a different last name than what is on their birth certificates, low-income Minnesotans and rural voters, particularly seniors," stated Annastacia Belladonna Carrera, Common Cause Minnesota Executive Director.

The act also potentially complicates absentee voting for active-duty service members. According to Belladonna Carrera, "Active-duty service members voting absentee face significant challenges if they cannot return to their local election offices to present the required documents."

Belladonna Carrera further noted the act's potential to create "layered barriers to voting" and to deny ballot access to legitimate voters, labeling it as a form of voter suppression. She emphasized that "baseless disinformation should not be shaping our election policy and laws."
