Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, has recently addressed several national and international issues through her social media posts.
On September 23, 2025, Omar called for a shift in U.S. foreign policy regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She stated, "It’s beyond time the United States joined a majority of UN nations in recognizing Palestinian Statehood and calling for an end to the genocide in Gaza."
Two days later, on September 25, she commented on the potential consequences of a government shutdown led by GOP lawmakers. In her post, she wrote, "Unacceptable. A GOP shutdown already means federal workers miss paychecks. Now they have to prepare for mass firings. Federal workers and the families they support shouldn’t be collateral damage."
Later that same day, Omar highlighted her efforts to secure funding for affordable housing targeted at veterans experiencing homelessness. She posted, "I was proud to secure $750,000 in federal funding for the Robin, a new affordable housing complex for unhoused veterans. I'll keep fighting in Congress to ensure our veterans get the proper services and care they've earned."
Omar has served as a member of Congress since 2019 after succeeding Keith Ellison and previously held office in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently residing in Minneapolis, she graduated from North Dakota State University with a bachelor's degree in 2011.
