Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, has recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing voting rights, labor issues at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and calls for accountability from federal authorities.

On August 6, 2025, Omar marked the anniversary of a landmark civil rights law by stating: "60 years ago, the Voting Rights Act was a promise that every American’s voice and vote would count. Now MAGA Republicans are silencing communities through extreme gerrymandering. Democracy only works if voters choose their leaders, not the other way around."

The following day, August 7, she commented on recent changes affecting VA employees: "Stripping collective bargaining rights from 400,000 workers at the VA is a betrayal of those who serve our veterans. This anti-veteran and anti-worker administration is dismantling the government from the inside out while silencing workers. Solidarity with the workers "

On August 8, Omar addressed issues regarding transparency within federal investigations: "Accountability is not optional, no matter how rich or powerful you are. American people deserve the truth. Now the DOJ has 2 weeks. No more delays."

Omar has served in Congress since 2019 after previously holding office in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. She succeeded Keith Ellison as representative for Minnesota's 5th district and resides in Minneapolis after being born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982. She earned her BA from North Dakota State University in 2011.
