Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, shared updates on August 1, 2025, regarding her recent community engagements and federal funding initiatives in Minneapolis.
On August 1, Omar posted about a visit with senior residents alongside Rep. Mohamud Noor at the Pillars of Prospect Park: "Spent an incredible afternoon with the senior residents and Rep. Mohamud Noor at the Pillars of Prospect Park, discussing how we can work together to expand Social Security and ensure our seniors have the resources they need to thrive."
In another post on the same day, she highlighted her participation in an affordable housing initiative: "Joined the grand opening of Wadaag Commons, an affordable housing complex in Minneapolis aiming to combat homelessness. I was proud to secure $1.8 million in federal funding for this project and I’ll keep fighting to invest in affordable housing for all."
Omar also announced progress on a local recreational project: "Broke ground on the North Commons Park renovation project with Minneapolis city officials! It was my honor to help secure a $2 million federal grant for a new three-gym field house, new waterpark slides and more to provide a safe space for our community."
Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th District since 2019 after previously serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. She succeeded Keith Ellison in Congress that year. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently residing in Minneapolis, Omar graduated from North Dakota State University with a BA degree in 2011.
