Pete Stauber, Representative of Minnesota, said that the Big Beautiful Bill will eliminate Social Security taxes for 88% of seniors, marking a historic tax break. His remarks were made on X.
"President Trump's Big, Beautiful Bill will eliminate taxes on Social Security for 88% of America's seniors," said Stauber. "That's the largest tax break for seniors in American history!"
Federal proposals to eliminate Social Security taxes for seniors have advanced in Congress with the One Big Beautiful Bill. According to The Wall Street Journal, this bill includes a provision exempting Social Security benefits from federal income tax for retirees over age 65. This policy has garnered support from senior advocacy groups and sparked bipartisan debate about its fiscal effects and the future of retirement security.
According to the Congressional Research Service, the Social Security tax exemption in the Big Beautiful Bill would benefit over 41 million American seniors currently taxed on their benefits. More than 95% of households aged 65 and older are expected to see lower tax bills starting in 2026.
The Tax Policy Center reports that this bill’s Social Security tax break is the most comprehensive ever for seniors. It surpasses the partial relief provided by the 1983 and 1993 reforms and would eliminate federal taxes on Social Security income for nearly all retirees, representing an unprecedented expansion in tax relief for older Americans.
Stauber, a Republican representing Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District since 2019, is known for his focus on senior issues, law enforcement, and economic development. He serves on the House Transportation and Natural Resources Committees, as noted by Ballotpedia.
