On May 1, 2025, Omar recognized Tesfaye Deyasso, who was honored as the 2025 National Hero of the Year by the National Association of Letter Carriers. Ilhan Omar, 40, was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and resides in Minneapolis. She has served in the U.S. Congress since 2019 and holds a bachelor's degree from North Dakota State University. Omar's previous roles include serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019, succeeding Keith Ellison in Congress.
