Amazon received $6 million in subsidies, tax breaks, and grants from Minnesota communities for one project.
Advocacy group Good Jobs First, which opposes such subsidies, found Minnesota provided the 33rd-highest amount of grants and breaks among U.S. states to the nearly $1-trillion company.
Minnesota is ranked behind Delaware (2 projects/$8 million) and ahead of New Mexico (1 project/$5 million), Arizona (2 projects/$5 million), and Nevada (5 projects/$3 million).
The subsidy was provided by the Shakopee government, which offered $6 million to Amazon for road upgrades via using a system similar to tax increment financing.
The two largest subsidy programs in Minnesota cost taxpayers roughly $200 million each year.
Approximately $250 million in property taxes from companies is diverted back into redevelopment projects for further industry, rather than to programs assisting taxpayers.
As of Nov. 17, 2022, Amazon had received 310 separate tax break deals from local and state governments across the U.S., totaling $5.14 billion. The state of Virginia was home to the largest portion of these taxpayer-subsidized Amazon projects.
