Local parent Mariah Hines wants everyone to feel her outrage over what she sees as the Peqout Lakes School District’s promotion and teaching of LGBTQ issues.
“Trying to teach our children to post a lot of things about like the LGBTQ community, which we, I would say most of us, don't have any issues with that,” Hines said. “We are a Christian community. But, personally, at my church, they say it's not for us to judge. So I don't have a problem with that. Our problem is that we feel different sexual orientations and things like that to be taught at home and not at school.”
Hines said she recently found the book 'Jacob’s New Dress' at the school for kindergarten through third grade.
“We can feel like the school kind of stepping out of its bounds, something that we would expect our school to teach,” she added. “We would want that taught at home.”
A North Carolina school system recently canceled the use of the same book as part of a first-grade lesson plan after complaints from within the community about the book’s content.
