Carlton County Board approves second business grant program for small businesses

Carltoncounty12002

Another batch of COVID-19 relief grants for local businesses has been recently unanimously approved by the Carlton County Board of Commissioners.

The budget will be lifted from the County Relief Funding Program through the Minnesota Legislature wherein $691,466.50 has been allocated to Carlton County.

Brenda Nyberg, loan and grant administrator, said that the grant amounts will be based on individual needs, thereby stating that there won’t be a minimum amount nor would it be capped to a specific amount.

Companies will be qualified on the basis of how the COVID-19 pandemic has damaged their business.

Unlike the last round, in which small businesses with only up to 25 employees were eligible to apply for the grant, this time around, the board is accepting the applications of small businesses with up to 50 employees.

The application period for the grants will commence on Feb. 1 and will be accepted until 4 p.m. Feb. 16. It will be open to nonprofit and for-profit businesses in the county.

According to Nyberg, the program’s goal is to focus on companies that have been impacted by the most recent shutdowns, or those that have not been included during the first round of grants, the Pine Journal reported.

“The funding priorities … came down mostly from the state,” Nyberg said. “Not to say that we can’t help other businesses, but they do want to prioritize those [affected recently].”
