Immigrants account for 11% of Minnesota’s workforce while making up 10% of the population, according to an American Immigration Council report obtained by Biz Journals on June 8.
The report also noted that the 484,192 immigrants in Minnesota paid $2.9 billion in federal taxes and $1.5 billion in state and local taxes in 2018. Minnesota immigrants also spent $11.2 billion as consumers and made $576 million in revenue as entrepreneurs in 2018.
A majority of immigrants are employed in the healthcare and social assistance field. That industry has 65,425, making up one in five employees.
There are currently 95,000 undocumented immigrants, which is 20% of the population. That population paid $191.2 million in federal taxes and $108.8 million in state and local taxes back in 2018.
Many immigrants hail from Mexico (12%) while 8% is from Somalia, 6% is from India, 5% from Laos, and another 5% from Ethiopia.
Most of the immigrants (255,008 to be exact) were naturalized in 2018, while 81,039 were qualified to reach that status in 2017.
