The Minnesota GOP will hold a virtual version of its state convention this month in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The in-person convention was originally scheduled to take place in Rochester May 15-16. Republican Party Chair Jennifer Carhanan said it is unlikely to be able to host 4,000 people in a venue mere days after the expiration of the state’s stay-at-home order.
Carhanan also cited Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. According to Minnesota Public Radio, a delay was impossible since Minnesota’s candidate filing deadline is early next month.
The party’s endorsement of a U.S. Senate bid selection of national convention delegates will be done online. Smartphones and tablets will be used for voting.
Local GOP conventions have been held virtually. Carhanan said the party was still receive full refunds with their cancelations because of the ongoing public health emergency.
MPR reported that national Republican chair Ronna McDaniel is still mulling what to do in regards to the party’s national convention in Charlotte later this summer.
