Michelle Fischbach, the U.S. Representative for Minnesota’s 7th Congressional District, said that the state’s trucking sector supports over 143,000 jobs and tens of thousands of small businesses, highlighting its significance to workforce and supply chain policy. The statement was made on X.
“MTA came to D.C,” said Fischbach. “Trucking makes up over 143,000 jobs in Minnesota. Has a footprint in over 65,000 small businesses. It was great hearing their perspective on workforce development and supply chain solutions.”
In 2024, the Minnesota Trucking Association (MTA) visited Washington, D.C., advocating for federal support on key industry issues such as workforce development, infrastructure investment, and technical training programs. According to the Minnesota State Freight Plan, the MTA emphasized the urgent need for funding to train new truck drivers and diesel technicians, citing a projected 4,864 job openings for heavy and tractor-trailer drivers in the coming decade. These advocacy efforts reflect the association’s focus on strengthening Minnesota’s freight network and addressing labor shortages.
As of 2023, Minnesota’s Transportation and Warehousing sector experienced a 5.1% employment increase over pre-pandemic levels, adding nearly 3,800 jobs since 2019. According to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, this growth places the sector among the top three statewide in job gains, demonstrating the trucking industry’s resilience and significant contribution to the state’s economy.
Minnesota’s trucking industry plays a crucial role in supporting small businesses and ensuring supply chain resilience. As reported by the Minnesota State Freight Plan, 86% of the state’s 8,121 exporters are small or medium-sized enterprises with fewer than 500 employees, many of which rely heavily on trucking to transport goods efficiently. This reliance underscores the importance of trucking in maintaining economic continuity across Minnesota.
Representative Fischbach has served Minnesota’s 7th Congressional District since 2021 and is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, including the Subcommittees on Trade and Oversight. According to her official House website, she also serves on the Rules Committee and supports legislation that strengthens transportation infrastructure and workforce development, aligning with the priorities of her largely rural logistics-dependent district.
