Representative Ilhan Omar, who serves Minnesota’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on social media addressing issues related to government support programs, healthcare costs, and voter participation in Minnesota.
On November 3, 2025, Omar criticized the Trump administration’s handling of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), stating: "It took a federal judge to make the Trump administration partially fund SNAP. Families who depend on SNAP shouldn’t be collateral damage for Republicans’ failed leadership. The American people deserve a government that works, not one that needs to be forced to do its job."
The following day, on November 4, Omar encouraged Minnesota residents to participate in Election Day: " It’s Election Day, Minnesota! Your vote = your voice. Polls are open across the state today. Find your polling place here: https://t.co/lTwVU1hClD"
Later that same day, she addressed concerns over rising healthcare premiums and called for action from Senate Democrats: "The American people are facing a real crisis, with Republicans letting healthcare premiums double for tens of millions of people. Senate Democrats must meet the moment and secure real relief for healthcare costs to reopen government—not fake show votes guaranteed to fail."
Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th District since 2019 after succeeding Keith Ellison and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982 and currently residing in Minneapolis, she graduated from North Dakota State University with a bachelor’s degree in 2011.
