The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has announced the retirement of Ted Matthews, a long-serving agricultural mental health counselor. Matthews will retire at the end of June after dedicating over 30 years to supporting the mental health of farmers across Minnesota.
In the 1990s, with support from Farm Business Management instructors and funding from the Minnesota Legislature, Matthews helped launch a pioneering model of mental health care tailored to rural life. His approach was to meet farmers where they are and offer counseling without bureaucratic hurdles or costs.
Research indicates that farmers experience common mental health conditions more frequently than the general population. The National Rural Health Association notes that the suicide rate among U.S. farmers is 3.5 times higher than the national average. Despite this, Matthews highlights that persistent stress in farming can significantly affect health and relationships even without a formal diagnosis.
Throughout his career, Matthews has supported individuals and families dealing with anxiety, depression, loss, and isolation. He has been a vital support for farm couples facing relationship issues, families grieving loved ones lost to suicide, and those managing trauma from disease outbreaks affecting livestock.
"Ted’s impact on rural mental health in Minnesota can’t be overstated," said MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen. "He has brought hope and healing to many in crisis with humility and heart."
As he approaches retirement, MDA encourages those who have worked with or been impacted by Ted Matthews to share memories or express gratitude via email to Meg Moynihan at Meg.Moynihan@state.mn.us or by phone at 651-201-6616.
