Later that day, Rep. Omar expressed concerns about actions taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She stated that students and faculty are being targeted and detained for engaging in protected speech. Her tweet reads: "Students and faculty are being targeted by ICE, detained, and silenced for engaging in protected speech. This is what authoritarianism looks like."

Ilhan Omar has served in Congress since 2019 after succeeding Keith Ellison and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1982, she currently resides in Minneapolis and holds a BA from North Dakota State University.
