Rep. Ilhan Omar, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota's 5th district, has voiced concerns over recent federal funding issues through a series of tweets. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and now residing in Minneapolis, Omar graduated from North Dakota State University in 2011 with a BA. Her statements on social media highlight the potential impacts of federal decisions on local communities.

On February 5, 2025, Rep. Omar tweeted about the risks posed by a freeze on federal grant funding. She stated that such action "endangers the lives of all Minnesotans" and would severely impact programs designed to combat the opioid crisis, respond to bomb threats, and reduce violent crime. She referenced comments from @MplsPDChief who shared concerns about community safety being at risk due to this freeze.

Later that day, Omar acknowledged public frustration through another tweet posted at 21:00 UTC. She noted that her team is receiving "hundreds of calls" and is doing everything possible to address them. She assured constituents that she and her team are listening amidst current challenges as seen in her post here.

In another tweet posted at 22:38 UTC on February 5, Omar highlighted the achievements made possible by federal funding in Hennepin County, which was able to effectively end veteran homelessness in 2024. However, she expressed concern that Donald Trump’s federal funding freeze threatens these critical community programs' sustainability as noted here.
