Minnesota recently suspended Medicaid payments to dozens of providers amid ongoing fraud investigations. State officials have cited improper billing and compliance failures as part of a broader effort to address Medicaid fraud, according to the Star Tribune.

“Governor Walz’s decision to suspend Medicaid payments is too little, too late,” said Peter Allen Stauber, U.S. Representative of Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District (R). “For years, he and his administration turned a blind eye while this money was stolen, and still, no one has been held accountable.”

A report from the Minnesota Office of the Legislative Auditor in 2024 found that Medicaid fraud in the state resulted in more than $30 million in financial losses between 2020 and 2023. During this period, numerous providers were investigated or prosecuted.

The Government Accountability Office reported in 2023 that while all states implement anti-fraud measures for Medicaid, oversight varies significantly. States such as New York and Texas have been more successful in recovering funds through aggressive audits and enforcement teams.

Pete Stauber, a Republican U.S. Representative from Minnesota, commented on the situation. “The suspension of Medicaid payments came too late to address fraud and reflects a lack of accountability in the administration,” he said in a post on X. Stauber serves on the House Committee on Natural Resources and the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, where he focuses on healthcare accountability and fraud prevention, according to Ballotpedia.
